Barangaroo secures more big names

Bourke Street Bakery and Gelato Messina along with pioneers in the coffee industry Toby’s Estate and Campos Coffee are the latest to announce they will take up space at Barangaroo.

20 October 2014 - Barangaroo continues to reinforce its presence as Australia’s latest foodie destination.  Following from the recent announcement of chef Matt Moran as the first restaurateur at Barangaroo, Lend Lease has been busy securing a line-up of the hottest eateries and coffee houses in the country.

The well-known foodies ‘go to’ Bourke Street Bakery and Gelato Messina along with pioneers in the coffee industry Toby’s Estate and Campos Coffee are the latest to announce they will take up space at Barangaroo – adding to the retail mix which will position Barangaroo as one of the best places to work, live and visit in Sydney.

In an acknowledgement of Sydneysiders love of great food and good coffee, the Barangaroo precinct will now ensure it has an authentic café culture with all four opening their first CBD operations. 

Bourke Street Bakery will be located in the Lime Street Shops precinct, where Surry Hills neighbour Gelato Messina will also reside.  Lime Street is where visitors can enjoy retail experiences and services similar to that of their local High Street.  It was the location of the site itself which was key in the decision making for Bourke Street Bakery with the store enjoying a prime corner position and a layout somewhat akin to their iconic Surry Hills store.

“For a while now we’ve seen the city transitioning down to the water’s edge,” said Bourke Street Bakery Founder Paul Allam.  “For us, Barangaroo seemed like the perfect location as it capitalises on the CBD position with strong population numbers and it also enjoys a connection to Sydney Harbour.  We’re not trying to replicate our Surry Hills store, but we will bring a sense of familiarity to our Barangaroo store when we open mid next year.”

For Toby’s Estate and Campos Coffee, both will operate sophisticated lobby cafes within Tower 2 and Tower 3 respectively at International Towers Sydney.  Tower 2 will be home to Westpac and Gilbert + Tobin and Tower 3 to KPMG and Lend Lease. 

“We look forward to bringing our high energy, fast paced team of baristas to Barangaroo to create great theatre in the lobby and to keep the caffeine levels of the workers topped up as we continue to ensure that the quality of coffee we produce is second to none,” said Howard Gill, General Manager of Retail for Campos Coffee. 

Campos Coffee, a long running recipient of the SMH Good Café Guide 3 Cups rating, will also serve their delicious pastries which are baked fresh daily from their bakery, Rosetta Stone, in Alexandria. 

Toby Smith, who founded Toby’s Estate back in 2001 in Woolloomooloo has built his empire to four signature cafés Australia wide; a presence in New York, Singapore and Manila, and is a leading stockist to several hundred independent cafés nationally.  Toby’s influence on the coffee scene is so well regarded he was inducted into the SMH Good Café Guide 2014 Hall of Fame for his contribution to the Sydney café culture.
