The project applications for the three commercial office buildings at Barangaroo South are now on public exhibition.
Architects, Ivan Harbour and Lord Richard Rogers, of the internationally acclaimed architectural firm, Rogers Stirk Harbour + Partners of London, have taken the designs forward to create a unique set of buildings for Sydney that respond to Barangaroo’s western harbourfront location and deliver a great new place for Sydney.
Design Principles
The fan-like arrangement of the main streets and commercial buildings draws the CBD down to the waterfront and opens the city out to the west. The ‘separated’ northern core, curved floorplates at the east and west elevation and their individual vertical ‘blade’ shading systems, combine to maximise environmental performance and produce elegant and streamlined appearances to the buildings.
Since their inception, the overarching design concept has been for the commercial buildings to work harmoniously together to give a clear identity and sense of place to this unique harbour front location. This approach has continued throughout the detailed design phases of the development to date.
The Barangaroo South commercial office buildings will provide a combined 320,000 m2 of the most flexible, large floor plate office space Sydney has to offer. It will help focus the world’s attention on Sydney as a leading professional and financial services hub for Asia.
The driving concepts behind the Barangaroo South buildings reflect the changing nature of the workplace. They represent a new model for offices of the future and have been designed specifically to meet the needs of the world’s most progressive businesses. Features include:

Sustainability
The sustainability ambitions for the Barangaroo South office buildings will be achieved by improved energy performance that arises from the orientation of the buildings, the positioning of the lift cores to the northerly aspect, the specialised vertical ‘blade’ shading systems and the use of high performance glass. Visually, it will be expressed through terraces, green planting spaces and solar panels on the rooftops.
The Barangaroo South commercial buildings will achieve 6-Star Green Star As Built v3 ratings and take advantage of shared, precinct-wide infrastructure to deliver a carbon neutral outcome for the precinct.
Human scale podiums, balconies at low levels, ‘vertical villages’, communal spaces and glazed lift shafts all improve legibility and activation.
Together the three Barangaroo South commercial buildings will deliver Australia’s premier – and most sustainable – business address and will help create one of the most dynamic and attractive places to visit, work or live in Sydney.
The modification application for C4 and the Project Applications for C3 and C5 are available to view on the Department of Planning and Infrastructure website at www.planning.nsw.gov.au.
